EDF to take on failed energy supplier Solarplicity’s 7,500 customers
EDF says it will move Solarplicity’s customers to a new tariff with no exit fees (most likely its standard tariff) and will honour all outstanding credit balances, including money owed to both existing and former customers of Solarplicity.
Small provider Solarplicity stopped trading earlier this week, shortly after switching most of its customers to Toto Energy. If you’ve been contacted by Toto Energy, this won’t affect you and you will stay with Toto.
I’m a Solarplicity customer – what happens now?
If you’re an existing Solarplicity customer, your energy supply will continue as normal and you’ll be switched to EDF tomorrow (Saturday 17 August).
You will be contacted over the coming days about the changes – including your welcome pack and the details of your new tariff.
If you want to switch supplier, Ofgem’s advice is to wait until EDF has been in touch before initiating a new switch. Once you’re set up, use our free Cheap Energy Club to do a full market comparison and see if you can save by switching.

I’m on prepayment – can I still top up?
If you have a prepayment meter, you can continue to top up as normal. You’ll be contacted by EDF in the coming days, and they’ll provide you with a new prepayment card.
If you have a smart prepayment meter, you will be automatically switched to a credit meter for a short period – letting your supply continue without the need to top up. EDF should be in contact to discuss returning to prepayment mode shortly.
I’m in credit with Solarplicity – will I get it back?
Yes, Ofgem says all credit balances will be honoured. You can continue to use this to offset future energy use, or request a refund.
If you’d left Solarplicity prior to it stopping trading and are owed credit, this will also be honoured.
I owe Solarplicity money – what should I do?
Current and former customers who owe money, or are in debit to Solarplicity, should wait to hear either from EDF or from Solarplicity’s administrators.
What does Ofgem say?
Ofgem’s strategy director Rob Salter-Church said: “I am pleased to announce we have appointed EDF Energy for the customers of Solarplicity. Their energy supply will continue as normal, and domestic credit balances will be honoured.
“EDF Energy will be in contact with customers over the coming days with further information. Once the transfer has been completed, customers can shop around for a better deal if they wish to.”
